How To Crochet

A Quick Start Guide On How To Crochet

. Don’t be discouraged if you see others behaving differently. Both grips allow you to knit the same stitches, it’s just a matter of personal preference.

As you begin to work the stitches, repeat the “hold, lift, squeeze” action. For the first few days I would tell myself over and over.

This is because you hold the string with your 2 bottom fingers, lift the string with your pointer, and pinch the part with your middle and thumb.

“Skip” chains actually count as stitches. So the number of skip chains depends on the type of stitch you are working on. Below is an example of using a vertical stitch.

Although this is one of the simplest stitches, it is used in many patterns, even the most complex ones. You can achieve a lot with this one stitch.

5. Yarn. No need to insert the hook – just turn it over as is.

As you begin each row, chain a certain number of stitches to bring you to the correct height for the next row. Below you can see how many chains you need to “chain” depending on what stitch you will be working on in the next row.

Row with chain 2/chain 3 and it counts as a stitch, on the next row knit a stitch in the top loop of that chain. Otherwise, the number of stitches will start to decrease!

This can be used to join two pieces of work together, move “along” your work, or add a bright edge to your work

No need to get fancy with other stitches just yet. Focus on the basics and be sure of them.

This will allow you to not only do the most common stitches, but also to know where to insert the hook in the front row. Honestly, this was my first and foremost point of confusion when learning to knit. This leads to my next point…

How To Crochet A Button In 5 Minutes

After working with the pattern, take a minute to study the stitches. Sometimes it helps to stretch the yarn a bit (after you knit the stitch, not before!) as this helps define the stitch a bit more clearly. The most important thing is to determine where you inserted the hook.

Understand that if you flip your work in your project, the place where you put the hook will flip.

For example, when viewed correctly, you would insert the hook through the top 2 loops to the right of the DC. (This is called a “right side.”) However, if your project calls for you to turn your work, the 2 loops you insert the hook into will be on.

Please note: not all projects have pros and cons. For example, if you are working on a quilt that starts in the middle and you start the next row and chain together to continue working, you will never turn your work. You are technically always on the right page.

For your starting chain (also called foundation chain) – or at least make sure the chain isn’t too tight. If the foundation chain is too tight, it will be difficult to see the loops and/or insert the hook into the loops, making your project unnecessarily frustrating.

If your tension is too tight, you can either a) make these chains a little looser than normal, or b) go up a hook size or two for the foundation chain and then switch back to your intended hook size. .

No stitch markers? No problems. You can use a bobby pocket, a twisted bun knot, a safety pin, or loosely tie a different color thread around the seam.

Since different sets of numbers and letters are used to classify hooks around the world, the chart below easily brings them all together in 1 place.

Did you know that different parts of the world have different names for crochet stitches? I don’t know why, but here we are! When I first learned to knit, I had to Google “knit stitch conversion chart” every time I read a crochet pattern from someone outside the US. So I thought it would be very helpful to have this information in one place,

Even though carpet yarn is very comfortable and not obvious, it is very difficult to see your stitches. Therefore, it is not recommended to use this thread when the stitches are still comfortable.

As you walk away from your project, use the hook to pull the working yarn up to about 6+ inches (ie finish the stitch and pull the hook up so you have 6 inches of yarn).

Why? If the working thread gets pinched or pulled, it can cause many of your stitches to come undone! Conversely, doing so will slightly reduce the 6-inch gap, which does no damage.

So, when you put the “PICTURE” in your bag or wherever you keep it, make sure you do this to be safe.

Do not use special or expensive yarn to test the pattern. Some threads look a little different when you first start working on a project and need to stitch it (ie rip it out, start over and make a “wall”!). The yarn can be a little fuzzy, so save the fancy yarn for when you’re ready for the real thing!

If you want to test a pattern before taking the plunge, acrylic yarn is a great and inexpensive material to learn about. As for yarn weight, medium or bulky yarn is best when trying out new stitches. The larger the yarn, the easier it will be to see your stitches.

But once I (finally) finished my chain and single crocheted it, it was easier to work my stitches. My tension subsided a bit and I started to feel more confident that I knew what I was doing. Keep practicing and eventually
